Dan Davies named chairman of Institute of Licensing: The Institute of Licensing, the membership and training organisation for licensing professionals, has announced Dan Davies as its new chairman. Davies is founding director and chief executive of CPL Training Group, the leading provider of face-to-face training and e-learning online to the licensed retail and hospitality sectors. Dan Davies brings with him over 20 years’ of experience in licensing training, having established CPL Training Group in 1991. The company, which was created to fill a training gap in the market for new licensees, swiftly adapted and grew to provide training solutions in the wake of licensing law reform. It is now the largest provider of the Award for Personal Licence Holders (APLH), the Scottish Certificate for Personal Licence Holders (SCPLH) and Scottish Certificate for Personal Licence Holders Refresher qualification (SCPLHR). Prior to the establishment of CPL Training Group, Davies had hands-on experience managing large nightclub businesses in the Wirral. As well as winning numerous company awards for CPL Training Group, he was awarded Liverpool Young Director of the Year at the Northwest Director of the Year Awards in 2010 and Young Entrepreneur of the Year at Insider Liverpool Professional Awards in 2008. On being appointed, Davies said “There are exciting times ahead for the Institute of Licensing and I look forward to using my expertise in business to bring fresh, entrepreneurial ideas to the Institute whilst ensuring it remains focussed and relevant.” Daniel succeeds Jon Collins who held the post for four years but is now relocating to the United States. Collins said: “We are delighted to welcome Daniel to the Board of the Institute of Licensing. His skills and expertise will add to the strength of the Board and will help move the Institute forward.” Myles Bebbington and Gary Grant will remain vice-chairmen. Gary Grant, commented: “Daniel Davies has an exceptional track record in promoting licensing training in a commercial setting whilst running large and respected organisations. He has extensive experience in dealing with all the major players in the area including government, trade and educators. It is the Institute of Licensing’s good fortune that his skills and energy will now benefit our charitable aims and the pursuit of excellence in licensing. The Board welcomes his appointment and will build on the sterling work of Jon Collins’ tenure to ensure that the Institute goes from strength to strength for the good of licensing practitioners across the board.” Tim Hulme, chief executive of the British Institute of Innkeeping, said: “At a time of great change for our industry, I can think of no one better placed than Dan Davies in leading the IOL through its next period of change. His entrepreneurialism and understanding of the regulatory environment will offer a different dimension to the Institute and the BII looks forward to working more closely with their team.” Kate Nicholls, chief executive of ALMR added: “The Institute of Licensing is a unique forum which brings together the trade, the legal and enforcement communities to discuss licensing law and the regulatory environment. We are delighted that Dan has taken up the post of Chairman as with his background, passion and determination he will help to galvanise debate and translate it into practical partnership solutions. We already work closely with Dan and CPL to promote professional standard and look forward to working closely with him in his new role.” Brigid Simmonds, chief executive of the BBPA said: “I am absolutely delighted that Daniel is taking up this new post. He brings with him a wealth of hugely relevant experience, and I look forward to working with him in his new role. When it comes to ensuring that the Licensing Act works effectively at safeguarding responsible retailing, working in partnership with others has never been more important.”
